Make (Believe) Friends
As an adult, I, like many, have found it hard to make connections and form longlasting friendships. A physical disability, social anxiety, and being just a general wierdo has made it even more challenging. Making art, imagining a fantastical world and creating characters that speak to my heart, on the other hand, comes easily and fills me with joy rather than trepidation.
I’ve found creating (and retreating) to these whimsical worlds an escape, especially during the current landscape of covid-19, political unrest, and environmental crises. This collection does not seek to ignore reality, but rather envisions a new one. The paintings and functional sculptures in Make (Believe) Friends invite you into my world; a magical vista, populated with tiny ceramic families and femmes, multi-layered paintings of animals and creatures (some in costumes!) and humans with their feathered and feline companions.
Making friends can be hard, make believing them is a gift I’d love to leave you with.
