Wild, 2022
wild
Wild was created in both Spring and Autumn when I felt the need to call forth the ecstatic force of nature. There is something both comforting and exciting about Nature’s refusal to give up; temporal in the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth; and ethereal in its various explosions of colours, forms and smells.
Plantlife does not plan; it simply is. In this series, I’ve done the same by using my non-dominant hand to draw florals, vases, and leaves in order to recreate the expressive qualities of the wild. I painted others without forethought; I simply sat and created until I grew tired or the canvas became full.
The pottery pieces were made using real botanical items pressed into the clay before firing, and then I applied washes and underglazes to highlight veins, leaves and roots. I’ve been particularly interested in not only foraging for interesting leaves but also in choosing what most call ‘weeds’. I’ve featured plants that survive in crevices, in abandoned spaces, and in back lanes to show the beauty in the resilience and of the forgotten.
